In love: Paul Mason with a picture of Rebecca

The American woman who fell for Britain’s former fattest man said yesterday: “His obesity turned him into the person I love.”

Rebecca Mountain, 40, who lives 3,400 miles away, got in touch with Paul Mason, 52, on Facebook last month after watching a documentary about him.

Love blossomed when they started chatting online.

Rebecca lives 3,400 away from former postie Paul, who used to weigh 70 stone.

But the couple hope to meet up as soon as possible.

Rebecca told the Mirror: “I didn’t plan to fall in love, it just happened.

“The first thing that attracts me to him is that he is a very genuine person.

“He is very open and trusting which has made it easy for me to trust him.

“We also have a lots of things in common, but it’s more than that - I feel a real chemistry with him.

“People look at a person and instantly make a judgement about them.

“But anyone who talks to Paul sees there is a lot more to him.

Battle: Paul Mason has lost 46 stone

“The way I look at it is that his weight is a part of who he was and what he has become.

“His obesity made him the man he is today, and that turned him into the person who I love.

“His experiences have made him a very strong person and he is certain about what he wants in life.

“That’s incredibly appealing to me because I’m the same way in terms of determination.”

Rebecca tracked Paul down on Facebook on August 4 this year after watching a video about his life.

They exchanged messages and e-mails before agreeing to meet up online for a video call.

Rebecca, who runs her own company making toys for cats, explained: “When I saw the documentary on Paul I felt compelled to reach out and try to help him.

“The first time we met up on Skype we talked for over four hours.

“He was exactly what I expected but what I didn’t expect was my feelings for him.

“It is very scary when things move quickly and you feel so strongly right away.

“But I truly believe this is relationship is different and very unique and I don’t have any doubts at all.”

Paul, of Ipswich, Suffolk, says he is also “head over heels in love”.

He has lost 46 stone since undergoing gastric bypass surgery on the NHS in 2010.

Rebecca, of Orange, near Boston, Massachusetts, wants to help Paul raise money to remove the unsightly rolls of skin left by his weight loss.

She added: “I know how I feel and Paul knows how he feels and I don’t think anything will stand in the way.

“We talk every day for many hours and I’m going to come to the UK.”
