A 41-year old Zhejiang man resected a malignant mouth tumor by himself using surgical tools he'd purchased from a hospital, including a pair of surgical scissors, a scalpel and forceps. He's reportedly performed this operation on himself more than 10 times.
Yu's "operation room" is his bathroom. Throughout the self-performed surgery, he shines a flashlight in his mouth to remove the growth piece by piece. He only sterilizes the surgical instruments right before the operation, and the whole process takes about half an hour every time.
Yu and his wife both work for meager salaries, and they also have a daughter to raise.
"Our life is in a hole at now," Yu said. "We have no other way to deal with the situation"
Last year, a small bump was found on Yu's gum line, which a doctor later diagnosed as sarcoma. Yu underwent professional surgery once and has been through 13 sessions of chemotherapy. However, his tumor recurred this year in May.
By the end of that month, Yu's tumor had swelled to the size of a ping-pong ball, making it hard for him to breath and eat. He had no choice but to operate on himself.
"Unless we remove some of his facial organs through surgery, he will experience a recurrence very soon," said Yu's doctor, adding that the cancer cells have already spread to Yu's brain and will begin to cause serious inflammation.
Yu has chosen to go against the doctor's suggestion, as he doesn't have enough money to undergo the operation.
