THE death of an autistic teenager who fell 46 stories down a high-rise building's garbage chute in the US city of Chicago has been ruled as an accident.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled that 16-year-old Charlie Manley - who also had Down Syndrome - died from injuries he sustained in the accidental plunge, the Chicago Tribune reported.
His parents contacted police on Monday night after they noticed he was missing from their 46th-floor home in the 48-story building.
His body was discovered in the garbage compactor at the bottom of the chute shortly after.
Investigators are working to determine how Charlie fell through the two-foot-wide (60cm) chute, Chicago Police Department spokesman Ron Gaines said.
The teenager's father, John F. Manley, has served on the international board of directors of the Special Olympics.
"Our hearts go out to the Manley family as they deal with Charlie's tragic passing," said Dave Breen, president and CEO of Special Olympics Illinois, in a statement.
"They will be in the thoughts and prayers of the Special Olympics family around the world."
