An 11-month-old boy who died in unexplained circumstances at a rural Victorian home will be farewelled today at a private funeral.

The family of Zayden Veal, who died just minutes after his parents reported a burglary on June 15 at their Bendigo home, have released a photo and a statement ahead of the ceremony.

"We cannot convey the deep pain and overwhelming feelings of grief, sadness and sorrow at the loss of our beloved child Zayden who was taken from us on the 15th of June," the statement reads.

"We loved him deeply. We thank you for your concern and interest, but we also request that you allow us and our families' time to grieve the loss of our beautiful child in privacy at this very emotional time."

A photo released of Zayden shows the boy playing with a soft toy in the back of a car.

The puzzling series of events that led to Zayden’s death unfolded in the Bendigo neighbourhood of Long Valley the same night as two other reported burglaries in the area.

Police had been en route to the residence around 7am to investigate the burglary as paramedics arrived to discover the baby boy was in cardiac arrest.

The child was taken to hospital in a critical condition but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A Victoria Police media spokeswoman said the investigation was ongoing.
