A woman, wearing a nylon mask, rests on the shore during her visit to a beach in Qingdao, Shandong province

A must-have: The mask is under mass production and is on sale at local swimwear stores

These slightly scary masks are the height of fashion among women on the beaches of north-east China

You could be forgiven for thinking this was a hold up.

But these masked-wearers aren't robbers raiding a bank - they're middle-aged women at the beach and, at least in China, they've come suitably attired.

The beach-goers in Qingdao, in China's north-eastern Shandong province, are donning these slightly scary nylon masks to protect themselves when they take to the sand.

The mask, which was invented by a local around seven years ago, is used to block the sun's harmful rays so wearers don't have to apply sun tan lotion.

It is now under mass production and is on sale at swimwear stores along Shandong province's East China Sea coast.

The sea port city of Qingdao is famous for its beaches, which are noted for their clear water, mild waves and soft sand.

The beautiful scenery and their European feel are also compared to Hawaii, Bali or Samet Island in Thailand.
